The other day I was handed a box full of old wooden planes and thought, its a furniture blog so why not show off some of the tools used to make some of these wonderful pieces of old furniture.
These old wood planes would of been used to create decorative features on furniture or simply to plane a smooth surface. The one below, I am not sure what the purpose of this antique wood plane although it does have a very nice brass gauge.
Most of the 20th century furniture would of been made with modern machine tools, this old plane probably dates from the 1900 but possibly earlier and would of been used by a joiner to make a 'one' of pieces of furniture.
Its not until you realise that the carpenter would have to put a lot of hard work using this old tool, you can see this in the patina and wear., how easy things are these days. How spoilt we are in these modern days when you can buy an electric wood working plane very cheaply. Probably less than what the carpenter or should I say "bench joiner", who used this old wood planer, earned in a year.
This antique wood plane measures 9 1/4 inches (93.5cm) and has been stamped with various marks. The marks are:
C W PARKES WARRANTY
AH BARNES
J SANSON
and a couple of other stamps which are difficult to read.
