Shabby Chic Welsh Dresser

Here is a wonderful Shabby Chic Welsh Dresser and something I created myself to be able to use as a prop for my studio. I say 'wonderful' because to me, its a great piece of shabby chic furniture but then I would say that.
Shabby Chic Welsh Dresser
Its my first attempt a creating a piece of furniture in the 'Shabby Chic' style and I was pleased with the results. I have taken some photographs and now have no use for it because all I required was a 'virtual' copy. Using Photoshop I can easily edit images, the wonders of technology!

I should of taken some 'before' photo's because the Welsh Dresser was in a very sorry state. Its had a new solid pine work top, numerous coats of paint and waxed & polished.
I didn't use 'Farrow & Ball', although on my next piece (will post photos here soon) I will be using it because they have such a great choice of colours. I found a great book on Amazon all about how to use Farrow and Ball colours to great effect, Farrow & Ball Living with Colour

The shabby chic welsh dresser has been finished with a gloss paint and I was pleased with the results. Its an 'off white' almost cream colour, I have tried to capture the colour in the photo's but its difficult and does depend on your monitor. I have added some more photo's  of the Shabby Chic furniture at the end of this post, they show the colour better.
Shabby Chic Welsh Dresser
More of a 'classic cottage' piece of furniture, I reckon and one that would look ideal in a small cottage kitchen, especially as the shabby chic welsh dresser is not too large. I painted throughout, I like it when the insides have had a coat of paint, much more cleaner in my opinion.
There's some signs of age, worn paintwork, knocks and bumps, I was tempted to bash the new worktop to make it look more worn but as its pine it will gain these over time. There's even a couple of paint drips here and there which I was tempted to remove but again, I like them and they add a little character to the shabby chic welsh dresser.

The knobs on the shabby chic dresser are original and have a great patina but these could easily be replaced with something different, there's so much choice out there. I did find a great place with lots of choice for all things shabby chic including these wonderful handles, Gisela Graham Pretty Round door Knobs (Set of 6) - Pink.

Now, must get back to editing some more photographs for the blog and ebay listings, its been a busy Saturday.

Old Charm Wood Bros Tudor Sideboard Cabinet

I like Saturday mornings, its a lazy morning for me before I set of to the 'Unit' to see whats turned up over the week. The 'boys' have been busy foraging auctions, flea markets and where ever else they go in search of antiques, collectibles and all manner of interesting things.

It looks like I am even going to have to start a new blog to keep everything separate because these days the 'unit' is looking more like Aladdin's cave rather than a 'furniture' warehouse. They have been selling furniture for over 20 years locally and have a huge stock of old, antique, retro and interesting furniture, hence this blog.

However, since starting out selling online they have been finding some wonderful things that are simply to good to resist, just like these old brass scales.

Anyway, back to the task in hand and today I spent time taking some photo's of a piece of furniture that caught my eye as soon as I walked through the door. I guess you can't miss it because its huge and a fine example of 'Old Charm' period furniture if ever their was one.
Old Charm Furniture

The Old Charm Tudor sideboard is one of those pieces of furniture that requires a large dining room to look the 'part'. I had never heard of Old Charm furniture until now and what attracted me was the Tudor style with the heavy ornate handles and hinges.

Whilst inspecting the Old Charm sideboard I was amazed at the quality of the build, all solid oak and even the back, usually finished in a cheaper wood. Its beautifully crafted, not that you would be seeing much of the back but its always good sign of quality.
Old Charm Furniture

The Old Charm sideboard was manufactured by Wood Bros a furniture manufacturer which was started in 1924 when Herbert Wood.......
  • "Herbert Wood's dream was to produce a range of furniture which combined unique style with quality and practicality. But above all, the furniture had to be unaffected by time and fashion - furniture which would actually appreciate with age, both financially and aesthetically".
This Old Charm sideboard was probably built around the 70's although it could be later and the only fault it has, if you can call it that, is the top. Like a lot of old furniture its showing signs of use and age but the top has a blemish, some discolouration, looks a little like a 'burn' mark.
Old Charm Furniture

Its large enough to notice and the 'boys' have been considering restoring, stripping the surface in the workshop and so on, it can easily be done. However, if it were me I could easily live with the blemish and the minor signs of age and wear, especially at their current 'asking' price.

Thankfully, the 'blemish' on the Old Charm sideboard is central so could easily be disguised by placing a 'center peice', antique ornament, a vase or bowl suitable for the Old Charm Tudor style. It would have to be large though, not to disguise the blemish but more in keeping with the proportions of the Old Charm Tudor style sideboard.

If you like this Old Charm Tudor style sideboard as much as I obviously do then go check it out if you would like to buy it. If you want to make the 'boys' your best offer then I am sure they will consider it because they need the room in the 'unit', I told you it was huge, they may even deliver it for free you only got to ask.
Old Charm Period Furniture
Below are some more images of the Old Charm furniture, its such a wonderful piece of old furniture to photograph that I spent most of the day 'snapping away, not a bad days work for a Saturday.

Shabby Chic Dressing Table

The other day we had a great piece of shabby chic furniture turn up and this is 'shabby chic' in its truest form. There are a lot of modern day examples of 'shabby chic' furniture and we even create some ourselves but this shabby chic dressing table is original.
Shabby Chic Bedroom Furniture
That is, its a piece of old furniture that over the years has been painted and re-painted as was most furniture was many years ago. Buying new furniture back in the day was expensive and not as affordable as it is today so most household furniture was painted.
Shabby Chic Bedroom Furniture
This often happened when a room was being decorated and it was often the norm to paint any old furniture in the room to brighten it up. This shabby chic dressing table is a great example and we like this, its a good honest piece of old furniture.
Shabby Chic Bedroom Furniture
Its solid and shows signs of wear and tear plus the paintwork is discoloured, probably caused by the sunlight. There is some nice detailing and I think the correct term for them is 'festoons' which add a little 'chic' to the overall design.

This shabby chic dressing table would look wonderful in the bedroom, not only a great looking piece of 'shabby chic' but solid built to last.

Antique Wardrobe & Bed Art Nouveau

The other day I finally got round to taking some photo's of a very nice bedroom set consisting of a Sterval bed with headboards and a matching wardrobe.
The Sterval bed was manufactured in Birmingham and the company traded up until the 1950's making metal beds and bed springs. They did make furniture but this ceased when the factory was bombed in an air aid in 1940.
The antique bed and wardrobe date before the 1940's and in the style of art nouveau so could be as early as the 1920's or 30's.. The condition is a little worn and the antique bed and wardrobe would require a little cleaning and a good polish.

The antique wardrobe is large with plenty of space and the detail, just like the headboard, is very ornate and stylish. The antique bedroom furniture is solid and constructed using the best materials, typical of the period.

This antique bedroom set would look stunning once restored and in the right setting.
